“you see, I have a policy about honesty and a**-kicking: if you ask for it, I have to let you have it.”

What I received in my inbox Tuesday night:

“Dear Shanna,

Congratulations and bless you! I’m writing to tell you that I have
officially added you to the list of people I have steered toward
becoming teachers. My goal since 2000, as you know has been
to reach one thousand, and you just helped me get a little closer
to it. You are teacher #0846.

If you’d like to create a link to the list or just see the company you
keep, click here:

From the bottom of my heart and the top of my lungs I thank you
for the noble path you have chosen to follow. You make a difference.

Metaphorically yours,

Taylor Mali

AHHH!

Now, I’d like to say that Taylor Mali hand-selected me among thousands of teachers to put me on his list. Nope. But I applied! I couldn’t help it after using “What Teachers Make” to mock-teach a class, after hearing it (dishonestly) appropriated and changed to fit other professions all over the web, and after seeing the method man himself speak at Miami’s convocation two years ago. He’s inspiring, hilarious, a wonderful poet, genuine, and serious about spreading the love of teaching and lifting up educators everywhere. He wants to make an impact in people who are debating becoming teachers in showing them that they are worth more than any other schmuck who chooses a career for wealth and status.

Watch the video “What Teachers Make” and tell me you don’t just wanna get up right now and go teach.
